Winny – Commercial Break – Dec 2024

Nigeria has been home to a thriving local music scene for decades, despite the fact that the vast majority of its music hasn’t gotten much global recognition. A local artist named Winny is rising after releasing this stellar record that combines influences of reggaeton and Afro-pop along with her distinct R&B stylings, providing an overall devise listening experience.

The ep opens with the opener ‘Picture Perfect’ which gives strong SZA influence in the vocal melodies as a choir fills the song with a stunning energy of R&B bliss. Mixing it up, the song ‘Suh Good’ has a modern Afro-pop feel, while ‘All Night’ immediately hits those reggaeton stylings. One can easily imagine an artist like Shakira doing a song of this nature. Towards the middle of the project you get the song ‘Lego‘, which is super smooth, giving an almost chillwave-like feel to the production here.

Overall though, one can feel a sense of positivity & calmness, and most importantly, love, from this ep. Winny herself describes it best herself when she was reviewed recently from Rolling Stone Africa.

“Each song represents fleeting moments of love, like commercial breaks in life where love interrupts the everyday routine. Love can come from unexpected connections and can be presented as spontaneous, catching people off guard in the middle of life’s ‘programming,’ much like a commercial break offering relief, a temporary escape from pain, similar to a break during a tense show. Each track symbolizes different stages or perspectives of love, just like switching between channels from passion to distance, excitement to calmness, capturing the idea that some loves are temporary, brief in the commercial breaks of life, leaving a lasting impact even if they are short-lived.
